California Biodiversity Day, established in 2018, is a celebration that inspires discovery and connection to the nature of California while encouraging actions to steward and protect it. California is a global “biodiversity hotspot” with many plants and animals found only in California. Discover the amazing biodiversity in our parks through fun family activities.

Celebrate California Biodiversity Day on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at the Leland Stanford Mansion. Explore California’s biodiversity through fun activities on the mansion grounds from 12:00pm -2:00pm. Kids can pick up a Capitol Park Junior Ranger Booklet and complete it at the nearby park to earn their Junior Ranger badge. Use your phone to take photos and participate in the iNaturalist Find 30 Species Challenge.

Bring your family and spend the morning on Sunday, September 8th from 9:30am-10:30am looking for birds in Capitol Park. The California State Capitol Museum is hosting a bird count in celebration of California Biodiversity Week. Meet at 13th and Capitol in the park grounds. Check in at the activity table where you will be given a bird guide and a map. Your observations will be sent to eBird, a global community of tens of thousands of birders. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, who manages eBird, uses community science projects like California Biodiversity Day events in their research and conservation decisions. No bird watching experience is necessary. Bring a hat, binoculars and a bird book, if you have them available.
